Summer Lovin' Sunflowers

This weekend I went to San Antonio to hang out with a bestie! Since we're both 85 years old at heart, we spent most of our time reading (she was actually studying for the CPA exam, and I was reading) and watching movies. During an uproarious viewing of Mirror Mirror, we whipped out some polish - and this is what I came up with! I was going for a summery sunset look with an orange, pink, maroon gradient. The glitteries on top are Sun-Flower Seeds from Etsy.

Ballet Slippers and Random Failures

Hello there! Boy, it has been a long time since I posted some pictures. Don't worry, I've still been doing my nails, I just haven't liked any of them. But I'll post a few random pictures just to prove I'm not lying.

Storm Troopers

New polish!

Alrighty, here's the look I'm currently wearing. Eons ago I bought some striping tape, which is what I used here. The purple and pink are actually painted on top of another random color I was wearing and too lazy to remove. My bad. I'm not sure why it looks lumpy... It's actually shimmery.

For some reason these remind me of the ribbons on ballet slippers. So that's what we're gonna call this.

Kelley, the hologram polish is for you!

Bad News Bears

Yikes, it's been a while since I've posted anything. Work got super crazy, and I'm finally getting back to a semi-normal routine. I even bought groceries yesterday! Unfortunately, in my absence the world has gone crazy.

  • A psycho murdered a dozen people in a movie theater and booby-trapped his apartment.
  • The Midwest is experiencing the worst drought it's seen since the Dust Bowl.
  • The NCAA handed down its final verdict to Penn State football.
  • A pickup truck packed with 23 illegal immigrants got into an accident, killing 14. Police claim that this was the worst accident they had ever seen.

So... that's depressing. And it may make you want to dive into a hole where you can secretly hate every horrible person you wish you could punch in the face. Lucky for you, I was in a super boring meeting yesterday and decided to find some happy news out there! Amazingly enough, there's actually sites dedicated only happy news stories! NBC's Wonderful World is pretty sweet, and there are tons of others if you're willing to Google.

Feel free to listen to this dude playing 100 guitar riffs from awesome songs - in one take! - while you read.

  • The London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony is on Friday!
  • On that note, a double-amputee from South Africa, nicknamed "Blade Runner," will be competing in the 400 meter sprint at the Olympics. Not the Paralympics - THE. OLYMPICS.
  • The San Diego Comic-Con wrapped up last week. There's approximately one zillion amazing new pictures, movie trailers, and rumors floating around the interwebs to fuel your inner nerd.
  • A little girl at SDCC asked Matt Smith (The Doctor) if he was afraid of the Weeping Angels. It was super adorable, and his answer was the greatest.
  • A 7 year old girl fell out of a 3rd floor window - and was CAUGHT, unharmed, by a neighbor!!

Hopefully this will brighten your day just a tad. There's actually a bunch of other things I think are awesome, so if you need some more let me know!

A Day at the Beach

Well, the 4th of July festivities are over. I had 5 glorious days off of work, and in true Quinnie style, I spent most of it watching movies. You're jealous of my lifestyle, I know. But now it's back to the real world...

Since I don't really get to go anywhere this summer, so I'm living vicariously through my.. nails. Here's a beach-themed creation complete with starfish, sand-dollar, and dead fish!

Captain America Shots

Since I love the Fourth of July and I love drinking, I decided to come up with a patriotic drink to celebrate the occasion. Nothing screams America more than CAPTAIN AMERICA. Luckily, there's already a drink for that, so I looked at a bunch of different version of it - and then I decided I didn't like them all and wanted to make up my own. Here's my shot-for-shot journey to the greatest Captain of them all.

Attempt #1
0.5 oz grenadine
0.5 oz pina colada mixer
0.5 oz blue curacao

Result: Too sweet - I think that because the pina colada mix doesn't have rum in it (what was I thinking) it made it wayyy too sweet. And it sorta tasted like bubble gum..? I also made the shot a little too big. It filled the shot glass, but that's probably too much to take down in one swallow [that's what she said].

Attempt #2
0.5 oz grenadine
0.5 oz Bacardi coconut
0.5 oz blue curacao

Result: This just looks horrible. The colors didn't separate at all!! They just look purple/brown... Tasted delicious though!! Just very coconutty.

Attempt #3
0.5 oz grenadine
0.25 oz Bacardi coconut
0.25 oz pina colada mixer
0.5 oz blue curacao

[no pic]

Result: I've decided that the bubblegum flavor is coming from this blue shit. I've never bought it before, so I didn't really know how it would taste. Apparently it's supposed to be orange, but that's a lie... This tasted better than the first, not as good as the second. But it was prettier.

Attempt #4
0.5 oz grenadine
0.5 oz vodka
0.5 oz blue curacao

Result: I didn't try this because I got so tired of the blue cacacaca.

Attempt #5
0.5 oz grenadine
0.5 oz pina colada mixer
0.5 oz blue raspberry mix

Result: This is 1000000 times better!!! There's not much alcohol in it though...

Attempt #6
0.5 oz grenadine
0.5 oz pina colada / bacardi mixture
0.5 oz blue raspberry mix

Result: Best so far!!! The blue and red stay together, instead of the blue floating on the top... but at this point I don't care. And check out this separation! Go me!! It turns out that it works better if you tilt the shot glass a little when you're pouring the pina in. I bought another blue thing, but at this point I'm not even going to open it because this blue stuff is so good. Might add some more booze to it though. I also bought coconut milk, but the pina/bacardi mix is working really well.

Attempt #7
0.5 oz grenadine
0.5 oz pina/bacardi
0.5 oz blue/bacardi

Result: Americaaaa FUCK YEAH! I think this is my final attempt. This separated well, was pretty strong, and tasted delicious!!

I'm going to a bbq tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be able to bar-tend a little and see how other people like this!!

P.S. I have no idea what is going on with this formatting and why there's stupid text highlights. ARG!

A Salute to America

AMC is doing a Matrix marathon today. Since I've only ever watched the first one, I figured I should probably see what I've been missing. I've heard the other two are terrible, and after 5 hours of non-stop Neo, I can confirm that this is true.

Independence Day is fast approaching, and since I'll probably be bbq-ing too much to do my nails, I went ahead and did them now. The first to nails are (obviously?) the flag and the other two are fireworks!

I started off with base colors: Essie Aruba Blue, Confetti The Red Carpet, and China Glaze Smoke and Ashes.
